What are the benefits of wearing sunglasses?
Sunglasses are available with or without prescription lenses. Whilst sunglasses are often worn as a fashion accessory, they also have an important role in protecting our eyes.
UV light can be harmful to the eye. Years of exposure have been linked to certain eye conditions, such as cataracts, macula degeneration and skin cancers.
Natural UV light improves our wellbeing and health. However, in the same way, we protect our skin by wearing sunblock, we should protect our eyes.
Tips to protect your eyes from the sun:
Ensure your sunglasses protect you from UVA & UVB light (this information should be provided with your sunglasses, or they will have a CE brand mark).
Close-fitting or wrap-around sunglasses will ensure good coverage and are more likely to block harmful rays from the sides and behind.
Wear a hat with a brim or sun visor.
Ensure you choose the best lens to suit your needs. Some activities such as sailing and skiing will need a specialised tint polarised or mirror.
